Small-batch OEM vs. full custom development: which is right for your robot?

Two different ways to launch your own AI robot — and the questions that help you choose between them.

The short version

Small-batch OEM puts your brand on a proven, tested product design. Full custom development creates a new product around your idea, with new industrial design, new molds and custom electronics. Both are valid; the right one depends on what makes your product special.

When small-batch OEM tends to fit

  • Your value is in the brand, the content, the character or the market you serve — not in a new physical shape.
  • You want to test demand or fulfil early orders without investing in new tooling.
  • You need something sellable soon.

When full custom development tends to fit

  • The hardware itself is your differentiator: a new form, mechanism, sensor set or interaction.
  • You want a design competitors can’t buy off the shelf, ideally protected by patents.
  • You have the budget and time for design, prototyping and tooling.

Questions to ask yourself

  1. Would customers notice or care if the body were an existing design?
  2. How many units do you realistically need in the first run?
  3. Is your budget closer to a first batch or to a new tooling project?
  4. How important is exclusivity of the design?

Not sure yet?

There are three equally valid starting points: a $500 custom sample (one unit with your own name, voice, personality, language and packaging), small-batch OEM, or custom development. Pick the one that matches where you are today.

Whichever path you choose, an NDA comes first. See IP protection.
